How to Remove Mold from Shower Caulk or Tile Grout

Bright, clean shower caulk and grout can make your bathroom look spotless, but getting rid of mold takes a special action plan. The challenge: mold and mildew thrive in a warm, moist environment – like your shower! With mold, it’s not enough to just scrub it away; you must kill it.

How to Clean Caulk & Remove Mold from Shower Caulk

The best way to remove mold from shower caulking or tile grout is to use a bleach solution. A thorough cleaning requires removing any debris from the caulk, then allowing the bleach to soak in, killing the mold. Finally, the caulk or grout should be scrubbed and rinsed to reveal your shiny, clean shower.

How to Clean Shower Grout

Follow our expert tips on how to clean the grout in your shower:

  1. Assemble your tools. Gather a broom or hand vacuum and dustpan, scrubbing sponge and old toothbrush or soft cleaning brush.
  2. Remove dust. Vacuum or sweep away any loose dust or debris from the tiled shower floor. This will help you avoid creating “mud” or spreading dirt around when you spray on the grout or caulk cleaning mixture.
  3. Mix. Create a bleach solution with one part bleach to 10 parts water in a spray bottle.
  4. Spray. Soak the mold and mildew on the shower floor and tiled walls with the solution. Pay special attention to any visible mold on light-colored tile grout or caulk.
  5. Wait. Let the solution sit for a minimum of five minutes.
  6. Scrub. Gently scrub the caulk or grout with the scrubbing sponge, toothbrush or other type of soft bristle brush.
  7. Rinse. Wipe down the caulk with a clean, wet cloth or rag.
