Resolutions are easier to make than keep. Set yourself up for success in the New Year by getting organized. Doing so can help you follow through on certain resolutions, such as to be less messy and more active.
Spend a Day Getting Organized
Pick a day between Christmas and New Year’s Day to get your home and family organized. With the kids out of school and a likely day or two off from work, this proves the perfect time of the year to get organized.
Start by going through each room in the home and pulling items from drawers, cabinets and closets that you no longer need. Separate into piles for donation, recycling, and garbage. As you finish each room, add the piles from each room to larger piles in one area; the garage, if you have one, makes a good central location.
Make a list of organizational items you need for each room, such as bins, caddies and organizers, as you go. This would also be a great time to deep clean each room, but don’t add this task to the to-do list if it means not finishing the organization of the entire home.
Once you have gone through each room, box up your various piles for dispersal. Dispose of any garbage and recycling in the appropriate bins, and head to your charity of choice to drop off any items for donation. Many have containers outside of the headquarters or even in various shopping center parking lots for your convenience. If you plan to use the donations as a tax deduction, you will need to drop off items during designated times in order to get a receipt.
You and your family should be due for a dinner break about now, so treat everyone to a special meal before hitting the store for the organizational items on your shopping list.
Once home, power through and put the items you purchased to use before heading to bed tired, but proud of what you have accomplished.
Set Specific Goals
In order to keep your home organized and free up time for your resolution to be more active, set goals for each member of your family. They might include:
- opening and sorting the mail on the day you receive it to reduce clutter.
- tidying the kitchen after every meal, putting items in the dishwasher and handling any hand-washing.
- hanging a grocery list on the refrigerator to ensure a once-a-week trip covers all needs.
- making the bed before leaving the house each day.
- folding and putting away laundry as it comes out of the dryer, instead of letting it sit in a basket for days.
- making a chore chart that requires each member of the family to check off items each day; no dessert after dinner otherwise!
Accomplishing the goals above on a daily basis will help keep your home tidy, but will also make time for other activities, such as being more active both as a family and individually.
