The dreaded bug season is in full force. As annoying as bugs can be during this time of year, we can’t forget the danger that comes along with them. These startling statistics about bugs may have you crawling with fear, but after following our tips for prevention, you will be sure to create a safe, no bug zone!
Flies: House flies can lay up to 3,000 eggs in their short lifetime of approximately 30 days. If you get one caught in your house, expect them to defecate about every five minutes. This contamination and potential spreading of disease can be extremely dangerous.
Prevention: To prevent flies from entering your home, reduce entry points by making sure each window and door to your home has a properly fitted screen with no tears. Also check for gaps where pipes enter or exit your home.
Cockroaches: Not only are cockroaches particularly frightening to find within your home, they are extremely hard to catch. Cockroaches can run up to 50 times their body length in one second. That’s equivalent to a human running 200 miles per hour! If that doesn’t freak you out, allergies to cockroaches are quite common in children. One in five children have been found to be severely allergic to cockroach saliva, droppings and decomposing bodies.
Prevention: To prevent cockroaches from finding a safe haven in your home, make sure your kitchen is cleaned regularly especially where trash is stored and accumulated.
Ants: It’s never just one ant. It seems that when you find one, you find a million. Actually, 1.5 million to be exact. Scientists estimate there are 1.5 million ants for every one human! That calls for one serious exterminator if you ask us. Ants aren’t just a nuisance—they contaminate food, damage property, and even bite when provoked.
Prevention: The best way to keep these hungry guys out of your house is to keep your house as crumb-free as you can. Ants are attracted to sticky or greasy messes- clean up thoroughly after each meal!
Mosquitoes: Mosquitoes are the deadliest creatures on earth. More deaths are associated with mosquitoes than with any other animal or insect on the planet! These blood-thirsty insects can detect human carbon dioxide from up to 75 feet away making it impossible for us to avoid them.
Prevention: Using repellents containing 20% DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or eucalyptus oil will detract these disease carrying insects.
