According to The Carpet and Rug Institute, the carpet industry began in the U.S. in 1791. And probably since 1791, people have been trying to successful get stains out of carpet! Whether it is kids spilling food, pets having “accidents”, or dragging muddy shoes in the house, there are always challenges keeping carpeting stain free. In this blog post, we will discuss a series of treatments on how to keep your carpet clean.
Blotting with water
This is probably one of the oldest carpet cleaning tips in the book. Get a clean towel, blot the spot and dry the stain working from the outside in. Rinse the towel carefully with clean water, then blot again. DO NOT scrub the carpet!
Spray and Let Sit….then blot
The “Spray and Let Sit” technique is good to let carpet stain cleaners neutralize stains in carpet. You simply let the cleaner penetrate the stain by spraying and waiting about 5-10 minutes. You then blot (see above in case you forgot!) until the stain is removed.
There are variety of different carpet stain removal products such as Resolve, OxiClean, and Bissell that you can pick up from your local retail store. If you are more of a DIYer or prefermore green cleaningproducts, there are some homemade carpet stain solutions made with itemsalready in your home! We have listed a few below:
Vinegar, dish soap, and water
One of the most common homemade carpet cleaners you will find. Stir one tablespoon of dish soap into 1 quart of warm water, and add 1/4 teaspoon of white vinegar. This is a good overall cleaner. However, test the solution on a small, inconspicuous spot on your carpet before applying to the stain.
Club soda can be used as a cleaner when it is spritzed on carpet. This is good for blood and wine stains.
You wouldn’t spray this one. Grab a towel and dampen with rubbing alcohol. Blot the stain with the alcohol soaked towel and let sit. Then blot with water.
Spray and Let Sit…then vacuum
This process is basically the same as above. Choose your carpet stain remover, spray on the stain, and oppose to blotting, you can use a liquid friendly vacuum to suck up the stain.
